The Partnership

Axis Communications is an industry leader in video surveillance, developing and supplying innovative network solutions that improve security, safety, operational efficiency, and business intelligence for our customers across the world. Working in partnership with CSL, Axis were able to deliver this innovative solution for a globally recognised distribution and logistics organisation. The solution monitors for potential hazards or dangers before they happen.

The Challenge

The rapid adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) within the logistics sector is being driven by ambitious sustainability targets and corporate commitments to reduce carbon emissions. As fleets transition from internal combustion engines (ICE) to electric, logistics companies are expanding their on-site charging infrastructure and increasing electricity demand across distribution depots and warehouses.

While this shift supports decarbonisation goals and long-term cost savings, it also introduces new operational and safety challenges. The concentration of high-capacity batteries and charging systems can elevate fire risks, particularly if charging stations are densely installed or not properly maintained.

Thermal runaway events in lithium-ion batteries, electrical faults, or inadequate ventilation can all pose hazards. To meet sustainability objectives safely, logistics operators must invest not only in EV infrastructure but also in comprehensive fire safety measures, robust electrical design, and continuous monitoring to protect assets, personnel, and supply chain continuity.

Our Solution

To address these emerging safety challenges, this integrated monitoring and response solution provides proactive protection against thermal incidents in EV charging environments. The system continuously scans equipment for abnormal heat patterns, detecting issues before visible signs or standard alarms are triggered. If the temperature within the monitored area exceeds a pre-set threshold, a thermometric camera instantly triggers an automated safety sequence.

The system commands an Axis I/O unit to immediately cut power to the affected charging point, preventing escalation and potential fire. Simultaneously, the camera activates an Axis network speaker to deliver clear, pre-recorded audio alerts, ensuring on-site personnel are promptly informed. In parallel, a secure connection is established to a central monitoring station via CSL’s DualCom Pro, ensuring that incidents are verified, logged, and acted upon without delay.

Where visual verification or CCTV imagery is required, CSL Router provides a cyber-safe data connection from the site to a monitoring centre or support team.

With fully customisable parameters, this solution delivers a fast, reliable, and multi-layered response to potential fire hazards. By combining intelligent detection, automated intervention, and resilient communication pathways, it offers logistics operators peace of mind as they expand their EV infrastructure in pursuit of sustainability goals.

Key Differentiators

The Axis and CSL solution offers some unique benefits:

  • This solution provides 24/7 reliable, cyber-secure monitoring of critical sites.
  • An increase in temperature above the preset threshold triggers an alarm.
  • The alarm initiates 3 actions:
    • Starts on-site audio alarm
    • Cuts power to vehicle chargers
    • Sends an alert to ARC.
  • ARC responds accordingly – notifying the fire brigade if required.
  • Relevant action taken to ensure safety and reduce damage.

Value Delivered

The Axis and CSL solution provides value with:

  • Proactive monitoring and situational awareness, even across large, complex or remote sites with extensive perimeters and challenging conditions.
  • Early detection of overheating and electrical faults before they escalate significantly reduces the risk of fires and associated downtime.
  • Quickly verify the validity of any threats to initiate an appropriate response.
  • Ensure the safety of people on site and reduce damage to buildings, vehicles or infrastructure.
  • Operational continuity and uninterrupted operations are ensured as risks are de-escalated promptly.
  • Reduce false alarms and unnecessary site visits with secure remote access capabilities.
  • Enable predictive maintenance and proactively resolve any issues.
