This month Simon Banks talks to Joel Mulloy, Group Director at Abel Alarm Company. Abel operates nationally with 13 branches across the whole of the UK.

Abel is one of the most established NSI approved installation companies in the UK, how does this benefit customers?

Trust is everything in the Security Industry. Customers have to feel assured that their lives and property are in safe hands. With a legacy spanning six decades, Abel Group has the experience and expertise to deal with everything from a simple alarm installation to a full commercial integrated system. Our NSI approval status complements and endorses our credentials to our customers. Their Gold standard and quality management system provides our business with a trusted framework.

What are the greatest challenges for a national alarm company in today’s market?

Managing change. We’re at a point where technology is evolving very quickly. The Security Industry needs to be sure to fight its corner otherwise we may find IT and Electrical companies taking market share. The Security Sector is risk adverse and highly regulated with a huge list of complex standards. Other business sectors may find it easier to bolt-on security services to their offerings. I think it is important we work alongside other partners, such as members within the ECA, to ensure the customer has a correctly installed and designed security system which adheres to ever-evolving standards.

What are your views on diversification for the Abel Group?

Abel has always been successful in market verticals and is always keen to embrace new technology. We have been offering system integration services for the past few years. We installed our first biometric door entry system five years ago and we are now in our 4th year of installing IPCCTV systems. We have invested significantly in our ICT knowledge and developed a very successful apprentice and graduate recruitment scheme. Working with the supply chain to bring in new products not only helps move our business into other profitable sectors of the installation and service market but enhances our customers’ experience as well.

What are the next steps for Abel as you approach your 50th year of trading?

It’s a huge milestone for Abel. We are the only national alarm company in the UK that is family-run. This legacy will be the foundation for a period of intensive growth as we step into the next 50 years. We know there will be significant challenges to overcome and the UK economy is still vulnerable to outside influences both in Europe and further afield. This can impact growth and confidence within the construction sector and wider business community. With the combination of our experience and enthusiastic new recruits, we look forward to the next 50 years with excitement.
